Under the guise of a singers' war at the Wartburg, Richard Wagner's opera ›Tannhäuser‹ tells of the failed attempt to reintegrate a rebellious outsider into society.
The title hero leaves his social circle twice. He does not feel at home in the sexually charged environment of Venus. And the moral barriers of his own scene make a successful return to this and to Elisabeth impossible. All that remains for him is to flee into religion. Two societies exist side by side, but only touch each other like parallel straight lines in infinity. Nuran David Çalış's political reading of the Tannhauser material transplanted the courtly society of the Wartburg into an environment for which Cologne's Keupstrasse could have been the model. Promising lights are reflected like very faded evening stars on the asphalt. The dream of a different, shared life is shattered and in the end the main characters are left alone.
