Ein charmantes, intimes Musical-Juwel: Cathy verliebt sich in den aufstrebenden Schriftsteller Jamie. Die beiden heiraten. Dabei wählt Brown eine raffinierte Erzählweise: Er erzählt die Liebesbeziehung aus entgegengesetzten Perspektiven. Während Jamie ihre Beziehung vom ersten Rendezvous über die Hochzeit bis zur Scheidung erzählt, blickt Cathy zurück, von der Trennung bis zum ersten gemeinsamen Abendessen. Nur einmal, bei der Hochzeit, treffen sich die beiden Erzählstränge. In mitreißenden Songs und Duetten ergänzen sich die beiden Perspektiven zu einem Gesamtbild. Dabei wechseln Up-tempo-Nummern mit Balladen, so entsteht zwischen den Protagonisten ein berührendes Gegeneinander von Emotionen. Der Stilmix aus jazzigem Broadway-Sound, Klezmer, Latin und Folk Music ergibt ein klug konstruiertes und musikalisch vielseitiges Kammermusical, das nicht nur durch die Verfilmung mit „Twilight“-Star Anna Kendrick zum Welterfolg wurde.

Brown chooses a sophisticated narrative style: he tells the love affair from opposite perspectives. While Jamie tells their relationship from the first date to the wedding to the divorce, Cathy looks back, from the breakup to the first dinner together. Only once, at the wedding, do the two narrative strands meet. In rousing songs and duets, the two perspectives complement each other to form an overall picture. Up-tempo numbers alternate with ballads, creating a touching conflict of emotions between the protagonists. The style mix of jazzy Broadway sound, klezmer, Latin and folk music results in a cleverly constructed and musically versatile chamber musical that not only became a worldwide success through the film adaptation with "Twilight" star Anna Kendrick.
