She stands there crying with her wedding ring in her hand: the actress Cathy Hiatt, who is dissatisfied with her career, mourns the broken marriage with the aspiring Jewish author Jamie Wellerstein. They met and fell in love five years ago. Jamie adored her—Jewish or not. And even if Cathy was struggling with herself, she wanted to spend her future with him, start a family. They moved in together, got married, supported and encouraged each other to push themselves. But then the problems started. What just went wrong? They find the causes in the work-related spatial and temporal separations, in the form of fear of failure, setting different priorities, envy and jealousy. Above all, Cathy's increasing self-doubt and failure as an actress on the one hand and Jamie's great success as a writer and popularity with other women on the other hand put their relationship to the test. The farewell is difficult for both of them and yet it is inevitable. The chamber musical The Last Five Years, featuring just one male and one female singer, premiered in Chicago in 2001 and was filmed in 2014, starring Jeremy Jordan and Anna Kendrick. The story, inspired by the failed marriage of author Jason Robert Brown himself, follows an unusual narration in which the plot is conveyed solely through the fourteen songs and from the different perspectives of the two main characters: Jamie begins his narration at the moment of the beginning of the relationship , Cathy retrospectively describes the events of the last five years, starting from the end of the marriage. The songs and duets, also written by Jason Robert Brown, are emotionally rock-pop, but also contain elements from the classics and genres such as klezmer, folk or blues.
