Honest pirates, lying generals, stupid police officers and the Queen - these are the ingredients for this operetta with its very own British humor.

Frederic only became a pirate by accident and is waiting for the end of his pirate contract. Hardly in freedom, he falls in love with Mabel, one of the numerous daughters of the highly educated Major General Stanley. But then fate strikes in the form of a leap year. A few more absurd entanglements and not least thanks to the Queen, the happy ending comes after all.

The writing team Gilbert & Sullivan knows every theater-goer in the English-speaking world: The cryptic humor, combined with light and elegant music, guarantees full houses to this day. The filmmaker Mike Leigh names the playwright William Schwenck Gilbert as the spiritual father of the absurd theater and thus also of what is today celebrated as "English humor" worldwide. For this takeover from the Musical Comedy in Leipzig, the director Cusch Jung, who was acclaimed for his ›My Fair Lady‹, returns to Wuppertal.
