Johannes Brahms' »Deutsches Requiem« is a universally human song of consolation without a specific addressee. Clara Schumann was deeply touched by the work in a letter to Brahms in 1867: »It is a very powerful piece, grips the whole person in a way that few others can. The deep seriousness, combined with all the magic of poetry, has a wonderful, shocking and soothing effect. As you know, I can never really put it into words, but I feel the whole rich treasure of this work to the core, and the enthusiasm that speaks from every piece touches me.« Brahms created his »German Requiem« a singular work beyond all genre traditions. Instead of the Latin texts of the Catholic requiem usual in a requiem, Brahms uses a selection of German texts from the Luther Bible.
