Un ballo in maschera is Verdi's first mature work and one of the composer's important works inspired by a real event, the assassination of the Swedish King Gustav III during a masked ball at the Stockholm Opera in 1792. The theatrical and spectacular Waut Koeken's staging for Lorraine's Opera uses the original libretto that sets the plot in Sweden, and not the censored version that forced Verdi to locate it in Boston. Un Ballo in Maschera is a choral opera, very demanding for the three main characters, which for the performances of this season will have a luxurious cast
