Claudio Monteverdi był nie tylko jednym z pierwszych twórców operowych. Obok doskonałych dzieł scenicznych kompozytora w jego dorobku znaleźć można równie udane utwory religijne. Jeden z nich, czyli Vespro della Beata Vergine (Nieszpory Maryjne), usłyszymy w wykonaniu francuskiego zespołu muzyki dawnej La Fenice.

Monteverdi skomponował Vespro della Beata Vergine w 1610 roku – w czasie, gdy miał już za sobą szereg sukcesów artystycznych, związanych przede wszystkim z twórczością operową. Nieszpory były pierwszym dziełem religijnym, które artysta skomponował po trwającej niemal dwadzieścia pięć lat przerwie w pracy nad twórczością sakralną. Kompozycja od samego początku została pomyślana jako muzyka liturgiczna oparta na tradycyjnych melodiach chorałowych. Jednak nowatorskie podejście Monteverdiego sprawiło, że dzieło to stało się bliższe w brzmieniu raczej ówczesnej muzyce świeckiej niż muzyce, którą zwykło się wykonywać podczas uroczystości kościelnych czy nabożeństw. Odważne zabiegi twórcy sprawiły, że Vespro della Beata Vergine stała się kompozycją ponadczasową, przyjmowaną z ogromnym entuzjazmem również przez współczesnych słuchaczy.

Francuski ansambl Le Fenice powstał dwadzieścia siedem lat temu z inicjatywy kornecisty Jeana Tubéry’ego . Swoją nazwę zespół zawdzięcza feniksowi – mitologicznemu zwierzęciu, które odradza się z popiołu. Tego rodzaju odwołaniem artyści pragną zaznaczyć istotny wpływ włoskiej muzyki barokowej na twórczość europejską. Wyjątkowy zespół tworzą międzynarodowej sławy soliści specjalizujący się w muzyce dawnej. Efektem ich współpracy są występy na prestiżowych festiwalach i wydarzeniach muzycznych promujących twórczość minionych epok, a także budzące podziw krytyków nagrania – w tym liczne albumy z twórczością Claudia Monteverdiego.

Claudio Monteverdi was not only one of the first opera composers. In addition to the composer's excellent stage works, his oeuvre includes equally successful religious works. One of them, Vespro della Beata Vergine ( Vespers of Mary ), will be performed by the French early music ensemble La Fenice.

Monteverdi composed Vespro della Beata Vergine in 1610 – at a time when he had already had a number of artistic successes, mainly related to opera. Vespers was the first religious work that the artist composed after an almost twenty-five-year break in his work on sacred works. From the very beginning, the composition was conceived as liturgical music based on traditional chorale melodies. However, Monteverdi's innovative approach meant that the work became closer in sound to secular music of the time rather than to music usually performed during church ceremonies or services. The creator's bold efforts made Vespro della Beata Verginehas become a timeless composition, received with great enthusiasm also by contemporary listeners.

The French ensemble Le Fenice was founded twenty-seven years ago on the initiative of cornetist Jean Tubéry. The band owes its name to the phoenix - a mythological animal that is reborn from the ashes. With this kind of reference, the artists want to mark the significant influence of Italian Baroque music on European art. The unique ensemble consists of internationally renowned soloists specializing in early music. The result of their cooperation are performances at prestigious festivals and music events promoting the work of past eras, as well as recordings that arouse the admiration of critics - including numerous albums with the work of Claudio Monteverdi.
