A woman who pretends to be a man who in turn slips into female roles on the show stage - these are the ingredients that give the musical Victor/Victoria its flavor. It all starts out pretty easy. Victoria Grant, an unsuccessful singer, comes to a bar. There she meets Toddy, who takes care of her and has the brilliant idea: In order to finally be successful, Victoria could pretend to be a man, who in turn is a woman on stage. She agrees to it - a decision that is followed by many trials and tribulations. But then love comes into play and presents Victor/Victoria with a difficult decision. The American composer Henry Mancini penned world-famous melodies, including the film music forPink Panther and Breakfast at Tiffany's . First filmed as a fast-paced comedy of mistaken identity, Victor/Victoria also conquered the stages in 1995 as a musical with a powerful big band sound and poses questions that are still relevant today about the social significance of biological sex, gender and the associated assignments.
