Eine echte Literaturoper: Goethes Welterfolg in einer französischen Bühnen-Adaption.

Der Dichter Werther verliebt sich in Charlotte, die jedoch schon mit Albert verheiratet ist. Charlotte ist sehr angefochten, auch sie liebt heimlich Werther und es kommt zu einer Annäherung, die aber dann von ihr unterbunden wird. Werther nimmt sich aus Verzweiflung das Leben, im Sterben kommt Charlotte noch ein letztes Mal zu ihm, um ihm nun doch ihre Liebe zu gestehen.

Jules Massenet war am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts der erfolgreichste Opernkomponist Frankreichs, der vor allem mit exotischen Stoffen reüssierte und besonders als großer Melodiker gefeiert wurde. Eine inhaltliche Ausnahme bildet sein ›Werther‹, eine Adaption von Goethes Briefroman. Die Pariser Opéra Comique lehnte das Werk als zu düster ab, so fand die sehr erfolgreiche Uraufführung dann in Wien statt.

In den Hauptrollen erleben Sie Sangmin Jeon als Werther und Catriona Morison, die Gewinnerin des Wettbewerbs ›Cardiff Singer of the World 2017‹, als Charlotte. Die Premiere von Massenets Meisterwerk ist gleichzeitig die Eröffnung der Opernspielzeit und der Saison des Sinfonieorchester Wuppertal.

The poet Werther falls in love with Charlotte, who is already married to Albert. Charlotte is very troubled, she also secretly loves Werther and they get closer, which she then stops. Werther takes his own life out of desperation, while dying Charlotte comes to him one last time to confess her love to him after all.

Jules Massenet was the most successful opera composer in France at the end of the 19th century. He was particularly successful with exotic subjects and was particularly celebrated as a great melodist. An exception in terms of content is his ›Werther‹, an adaptation of Goethe's epistolary novel. The Paris Opéra Comique rejected the work as too dark, so the very successful premiere took place in Vienna.

Starring Sangmin Jeon as Werther and 2017 Cardiff Singer of the World winner Catriona Morison as Charlotte. The premiere of Massenet's masterpiece is also the opening of the opera season and the season of the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra.
