Yevgeny Onegin "I don't need tsars, popular uprisings, battles, marches... I'm looking for an intimate but powerful drama, based on conflicts that I've experienced myself, that can touch me to the core." Pushkin's Yevgeny Onegin touched the composer like no other material . Against all warnings from his friends that the subject matter was not dramatic enough, Tchaikovsky composed his intimate opera entitled "Lyrical Scenes". Soon after the Moscow premiere, Yevgeny Onegin became Tchaikovsky's greatest success to date. In its open structure, which focuses on the inner life of the young protagonists, it points far ahead into the future of music theatre. At first sight, Tatjana, who lives only in the love stories of her novels, falls in love with Onegin, a spoiled, condescending intellectual. That same night she wrote a rapturous letter to Onegin, in which she confessed her love and placed her fate in his hands. Onegin coolly rejects her – he is not made for marriage. When Onegin flirts with Tatyana's sister Olga at a ball, his friend Lenski, who loves Olga, challenges him to a duel. Onegin shoots Lensky. Years later, Tatyana and Onegin meet again. Tatjana is now the wife of the rich Prince Gremin. Onegin's effusive declaration of love comes too late. With Peter Mattei as Onegin and Pavol Breslik as Lenski, two great singers can be experienced in this production in signature roles, for which they are celebrated worldwide. The promising Ukrainian soprano Olga Bezsmertna sings Tatjana. Barrie Kosky, who was named Director of the Year for his Macbeth production at Zurich Opera House, stages Tchaikovsky's tragic tale of missed opportunities.
