For ZAIRA, the writer Voltaire is brought to life by our make-up artist

Sultan Orosmane wants to marry the Christian Zaira from his harem; she wants to convert to Islam for this. This love is not welcomed by either faith community. Bellini's fifth opera is based on a piece by Voltaire that deals with a moral rather than a romantic conflict and thus deals with highly topical issues, and is rich in duets, ensembles and opulent choral scenes. The orchestration created especially for Gießen by Herbert Gietzen guarantees a sound that is stylistically fair to Bellini.
