Le nozze di Figaro (Royal Opera House)
Anita Hartig and Ellie Dehn share similar voice types, which makes their fourth-act shenanigans when Susanna and the Countess swap identities more convincing than usual. Each has a feather-light timbre – indeed, there were moments in "Dove sono" when Dehn's could have done with guy ropes to weigh it down – and they bring such airiness to their big duet, "Sull'aria", that they all but...

Gerald Finley's exquisite melancholy suffuses Covent Garden's Adriana Lecouvreur
Gerard Finley was a different Michonnet from others I’ve seen – more expansive, less of a character actor – but the beauty of his velvet timbre and his lieder singer’s attention to the nuance of the text made him intensely watchable. Each time he portrayed one of the scenes where Michonnet finds himself incapable of declaring his true love to Adriana, I felt the man's wrenching melan...

Tempête sous un crâne
The stage is well balanced, with the sonorous and meaty Wozzeck of Mark Stone who sang his role as if expressing an idée fixe, with a quasi-monolithic obsession.

The British baritone Mark Stone expresses the pain and brutality of the title role without ever overplaying / Le baryton britannique Mark Stone exprime la douleur et la bestialité du rôle-titre sans jamais surjouer

In Between Mahler and Zimmerman: Wozzeck in Geneva
Mark Stone was making his début in Geneva as Wozzeck. He had all the vocal material for the part, his technique is strong and he gave an intense portrayal. This is a name to look out for, and he received well-deserved applause from the audience.

Operní kukátko s Jennifer Larmore, Ferrucciem Furlanettem i Pavlem Breslikem
The British baritone Mark Stone, who has an extensive repertoire of principal roles from Mozart's most famous operas (Don Giovanni, Figaro and Count Almaviva from Le nozze di Figaro, Guglielmo and others) through to contemporary works, gave the title role a vocal charisma and a great deal of psychological and obsessive characterisation (which two critics have even compared with the p...

«Wozzeck», une mémorable plongée dans les abîmes
Jennifer Larmore (Marie) and Mark Stone (Wozzeck), extraordinary interpreters of Alban Berg's masterpiece at the Opéra des Nations … Mark Stone (Wozzeck) and Jennifer Larmore (Marie) impress with their technical ease, with a miraculous faultlessness. But above all, they overwhelm with the power of the incarnation of the characters, with the quality of their acting. / Jennifer Larmore...

The Magic Flute, Royal Opera House review: an ideal if imperfect Christmas prelude
The cast is entirely new, and it’s led by a British tenor who is now deservedly moving centre-stage in London after a long apprenticeship in Germany. Benjamin Hulett’s sound is simply glorious – rich, rounded, warm, and expressive – and he incarnates Prince Tamino as though born to play the part.

Rising stars have a crazy day: Figaro returns to Covent Garden
Count Almaviva was well taken by Argentinean Germán E Alcántara (...)in his first major role here, showed vocal and histrionic gifts. In the Act 2 altercation with the Countess his violent side was visibly and vocally only just in check, an aristocrat aware he is losing control of events.

‘Tosca’ Catches Fire at the Met Opera
In a fall at the Met that’s been full of momentous new works, intriguing repertory firsts and six-hour epics, this seemed on paper just an ordinary revival of David McVicar’s production. The soprano Sondra Radvanovsky was returning in the title role; the tenor Brian Jagde was appearing at the Met for the second time, singing Cavaradossi; the veteran baritone George Gagnidze (a late r...
