Bio: Doris Soffel is one of the greatest mezzos of our time. She was not only a passionate Carmen and an elegant Octavian, but also the only German mezzo to make an International career as bel canto singer.
In 90ies more dramatic roles like Amneris, Eboli and Klytämnestra (in Salzburg with Maazel). Soffel´s Ortrud with Luisi and Kundry in Berlin with Thielemann brought her to the front ranks of Wagner singers. Her stunning Frickas in the Cologne Carsen-Ring with Tate, in Amsterdam with Haenchen and at La Scala, Milan, with Barenboim (2010), confirmed her earlier success with this part under Solti in Bayreuth. From 2005 on she continued establishing her career as Wagner and R.Strauss-singer with Kundry, Fricka and Brangäne in Venice and Amme (Frau ohne Schatten) in Los Angeles, Dresden, Toulouse, Amsterdam and Berlin , Herodias (Salome) in several productions, incl. Paris, Munich, Dresden, Amsterdam, Baden-Baden and Washington, Klytämnestra (Elektra) i.a. in Brussels and Munich.
In 2008 she sang Marfa (Mussorgskis Khovanschina) in Munich, Kabanicha (Janaceks Katia Kabanova) in Cologne and Jezhibaba (Dvoraks Rusalka) in Brussels. Soffel worked with such conductors as von Karajan, Celibidache, Solti, Giulini, Sinopoli and Sawallisch and today i.a. with Maazel, Mehta, Barenboim, Luisi, Nagano and Thielemann.
She sang in prestigious opera centres and festivals like Berlin, Munich, Dresden, Bayreuth, Salzburg, Vienna, Paris, London, Milan, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Stockholm, St. Petersburg, Buenos Aires, Los Angeles, New York and Tokyo. She is also a great Lied and concert singer, e.g. acclaimed worldwide as Mahler interpreter. More than 60 CDs and many Video/DVDs from opera, concert and Lied, incl. Mahler, Beethoven, Brahms and Schubert.
Among the latest recordings on the market are Parsifal from La Fenice, Venice, Rheingold and Walküre from the Amsterdam Ring, Khovanschina from Munich and Salome from Baden-Baden. Among upcoming projects are Herodias at La Monnaie, Brussels, Madame de Croissy (Poulencs Dialogue des Carmelites) in Stuttgart, Adelaide (Strauss Arabella) in Opéra Bastille, Paris and Teatro Liceo Barcelona, Genevieve (Debussy Peleas et Melisande) in Essen, Klytämnestra in Leipzig and Fricka in Amsterdam and at Deutsche Oper Berlin with Sir Simon Rattle and in 2014 The Countess in Pique Dame in Zurich.
