Bio: Reviewed as “breathtaking” by Das Opernglas, Giuseppe Varano has been praised as one of the most promising tenors of his generation. He has performed the operas of Verdi and Puccini in major Italian and international opera houses and festivals, including Theatre La Fenice, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Teatro Massimo (Palermo), Teatro Bellini (Catania), New York City Opera, Opera Colorado, Köln Opera, and Savonlinna Opera Festival. After obtaining a diploma in singing technique, he attended masterclasses at Teatro Lirico Sperimentale with artists such as Maria Agresta and Andrea Carè, and studied with Alain Billard and Beppe De Tomasi at Voci Verdiane Academy in Verdi’s hometown of Busseto. He has worked with world-renowned conductors and directors including Claudio Abbado, Daniele Callegari, Peter Konwitschny, Pier Giorgio Morandi, Renato Palumbo, Pietro Rizzo, Massimo Zanetti, and Franco Zeffirelli, among others. Tenor Giuseppe Varano completed his musical studies at the Conservatorio “A. Corelli” in Messina in 2002 and obtained further training at the Fondazione “Arturo Toscanini” in Parma. He made his professional debut in July 2003 in La traviata in Busseto, in a production directed by Franco Zeffirelli. His operatic appearances include Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly at the Teatro Carlo Coccia in Novara, Teatro Caio Melisso in Spoleto, Teatro Comunale in Bologna, Savonlinna Opera Festival and Teatro Massimo in Palermo; Rodolfo in La bohème at Teatro La Fenice, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, in Düsseldorf, and at Oper Leipzig; Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette at Palma de Mallorca, Opera Colorado, Teatro Bellini in Catania; Alfredo in La traviata in Modena, Piacenza, Bolzano, Messina, at Madison Opera in Wisconsin, and in Graz; Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto in Montreal, Macduff in Verdi’s Macbeth on tour in China with the Savonlinna Opera Festival; and Cassio in Verdi’s Otello, directed by Giancarlo Del Monaco at Beijing Opera. His recent concert appearances include the tenor solo in Verdi’s Messa di Requiem in Messina and Bucarest and Dvořák’s Stabat Mater at the Auditorium RAI in Turin. Recent engagements also include several debuts, like at New York City Opera as Avito in L'Amore dei tre re (The Love of the Three Kings - April 2018), Pollione in Norma in September 2018 (International Opera Company Finland), praised Don Josè in Carmen (Teatro Galli - January 2019) and his first performance as Calaf in Turandot (Helsinki - August 2020).
