Bio: Described as “Outstanding, handsome-sounding and wonderfully subtle” (the Guardian), British baritone James Cleverton studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and Opernhaus Zürich International Opera Studio. This seasons engagements include Horemhab in Philip Glass’ Akhnaten, and the Photographer in the world premiere of Jack the Ripper (ENO), Papageno Die Zauberflöte (Scottish Opera), Barone Douphol La traviata (WNO), and Marco L'Arlesiana (Opera Holland Park). On the concert platform he will perform Carmina Burana with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and a series of Opera Gala Concerts both at the Royal Albert Hall, a Hogmany Gala Concert with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra at the Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow, and Mozart by Candlelight at the Barbican, London. Previous seasons’ highlights include Gusmano in Verdi’s rarely performed Alzira (Buxton International Festival); Marcello La bohéme & Sharpless Madam Butterfly (Royal Albert Hall); Kyoto Iris (Opera Holland Park); Papageno Die Zauberflöte (Theater Saint Gallen); Dulcamara L’elisir D’amore (Scottish Opera); Count Asdrubale La Pietra del Paragone (Opernhaus Zürich and Opéra de Rennes); Ford Falstaff (Grange Park Opera); Frank Die Fledermaus (Welsh National Opera); Gregorio Roméo et Juliette (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden); Commercial Councillor Intermezzo (Garsington Opera); the title role in Don Giovanni, Il Conte Le Nozze di Figaro, and Danilo The Merry Widow (National Concert Hall, Dublin); The Pirate King The Pirates of Penzance (D’Oyly Carte); Captain Corcoran HMS Pinafore, Grosvenor Patience and Giuseppe The Gondoliers (International G&S Festival). Robert Oppenheimer in John Adams’ Doctor Atomic, 1st Officer The Death of Klinghoffer, and Horemhab Akhnaten (English National Opera); the title role in Schweitzer’s Jakob von Gunten (Theater Saint Gallen); White Rabbit in the world première of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (Opera Holland Park & Royal Opera House); 2nd Apprentice Wozzeck (BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra & English National Opera); and Chou En-lai Nixon in China (RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra/Irish National Opera). Subsequent roles include Johannes Morgen und Abend, Stern Anna Nicole, Theseus The Minotaur, 'N' in Rhim’s Dionysus, the title role Jakob Lenz, Punch Punch and Judy, Šiškov From the House of the Dead, and the title role Wozzeck Equally in demand on the concert platform, Cleverton regularly performs concerts, recitals and oratorios throughout the UK & internationally.
