Soprano
Bio: Lirico-spinto soprano Leah Gordon was awarded in 2005 a Master of Music in Performance with distinction from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. The young Canadian started as a soloist at age 24 in the permanent ensemble at Musiktheater im Revier in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, taking on the roles from the light-lyric coloratura repertoire. In 2008 she joined the ensemble at the State Theater in Nuremberg where she held the position of principle soloist for the following ten years, starting in the lyric soprano roles. 2016 marked an important development for Leah, winning second prize at the  "Elizabeth Connell” international competition for young dramatic sopranos. It was at the time that she moved in the lyric-dramatic repertoire that she began collecting top prizes in such international vocal competitions as the "Magda Olivero", "Beppe de Tomasi", "Vox Artis", "Jole de Maria”, ”Marcello Giordani” and including the coveted Fulham Opera Verdi Prize and the Nuovo Canto Opera Wagner Prize. She had the honour of being awarded first prize in the “Concorso Internazionale Elsa Respighi Liriche da camera ottonovecento Italiano”; a competition specifically for the promotion of the interpretation of Italian art-song. An experienced recitalist, Leah has given concerts in many international venues including the most prestigious; the Teatro Filarmonica, Verona. She has performed on numerous German regional stages and has been a returning guest artist to the Glyndebourne Opera Festival and Bavarian State Theater in Munich. Leah has interpreted over 50 operatic roles on stage, particularly Amelia (Un ballo in maschera), Contessa Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Liù (Turandot), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Rachel (La Juive) and Elettra (Idomeneo). Her debut in 2019 as Elvira (Ernani) was broadcast live on Deutschlandfunk Kultur Radio and produced as a professional recording. Both her stage performance and the recording has been critically acclaimed and nominated for awards; hailing Leah as the “musical discovery of the year”. Recently she debuted as Elisabeth de Valois (Don Carlos), and was called upon to jump-in last minute at the Opèra Royal de Wallonie, Liège under the baton of Maestro Paolo Arrivabene earning her critical attention. She is planned to make three role debuts in 2021; as Rosalinde (Die Fledermaus), as the title-role in Fidelio at the Lech Classic Music Festival, and as Elisabeth (Tannhäuser) at the Opera Festival Heidenheim.

Reviews

Christa Dietrich
