Bio: The Austrian conductor Leonhard Garms grew up Italy. He studied Music, Conducting and Piano at the Kunstuniversität in Graz (Austria). He attended masterclasses with Peter Eötvös, Arturo Tamayo und Paavo Järvi.
While still in his study, he starts working as a pianist at the Opera of Graz und the Festival Styriarte .
In 2005, he starts working as a pianist for the Komische Oper in Berlin, and changes in 2008 as coach and conductor at the Theatre of Regensburg in Germany, where he develops a repertoire of numerous opera works and a real interest in conducting contemporary music. Since 2010, Leonhard Garms has worked freelance (among others, Ruhr Triennale and National Theatre of Wiesbaden in Germany, National Opera of Korea, Opera house of Lausanne, Opéra-Comique in Paris, Opéra de Rennes, Opéra de Nantes/Angers in France, Orchestra Haydn Bolzano in Italy, Wiener Festwochen in Austria), being Assistant of conductors like Kirill Petrenko, Peter Rundel, Emilio Pomarico.
For the seasons 2011/2012 he works as conductor at the Turkish National Opera house in Istanbul, and for the season 2015/16 at the Opera house of Graz (Austria).
His profound interest in contemporary music brings him conducting numerous Instrumental Ensembles such as Schallfeld Ensemble, The Blackpage Orchestra, Ensemble Resonanz, Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Phace.
He develops there a real practice and research of experimental performances at the border of theatre and music.
