Already in her dreams, Elsa had a crush on the Swan Knight: a mysterious hero who would defend her against the false accusations of Telramund and Ortrud and free the entire people of Brabant. As a deus ex machina, the Redeemer appears at the right moment and Elsa is saved. But even the most sublime act of knighthood is not unconditional: Elsa must never ask him about his identity.

“It was difficult for me to part with your 'Lohengrin'. The more I delved into the conception and the masterful execution, the greater my enthusiasm for this extraordinary work grew” wrote Franz Liszt to Richard Wagner, who was in exile in Switzerland during the premiere of his opera. The opera, which premiered in Weimar in 1850 under Liszt himself, was based on a large number of literary texts and German sagas and has since been interpreted in a wide variety of ways. But beyond the mythological background and the subsequent history of reception, Wagner created a captivating soundscape of enchanting beauty and complexity. "Lohengrin" thus marks the transition in the composer's work from romantic opera to the world of music drama.
