Schon im vergangenen Jahr hatte das BADISCHE STAATSTHEATER den international gefragten Dirigenten Markus Stenz eingeladen, dieses Konzert wird nun nachgeholt. Stenz hat viel Mahler und moderne Komponist*innen aufgenommen sowie bedeutende Orchester als Chefdirigent geleitet.

Die Tanz-Suite schrieb Bartók als Auftragskomposition; Anlass war der 50. Jahrestag der Vereinigung der Städte Buda und Pest. Als Verächter der chauvinistischen Regierung seiner Zeit schreibt Bartók eine völkerverbindende Tanz-Suite, die ungarische und rumänische Folklore mit orientalischen und arabischen Elementen zusammenbringt. Der Komponist selbst sprach von einer „Verbrüderung der Völker“.

Ganz anders komponierte der Ungar Franz Liszt in seinem Klavierkonzert Nr. 1, an dem er 20 Jahre lang gearbeitet hat. Zu Beginn treten Orchester und Klavier in einen Dialog miteinander – oder schon eher gegeneinander. Unter dieses harsche Eröffnungsthema soll Liszt „Das versteht ihr alle nicht, haha!“ geschrieben haben, nachdem die Uraufführung bei den Kritikern durchgefallen war. Zu groß schien den Zeitgenossen der Orchesterpart, zu albern das Klavier-Triangel-Duett im Finale. Heute ist es ein Klavierkonzert, das durch seine Abwechslung zwischen virtuosen Wasserfällen und gemächlichem Rauschen besticht, das sinfonische Züge und Notturno-Charakter in sich vereinigt.

Die Rheinische markiert einen Neuanfang im Leben der Schumann-Familie. 1841 zog Robert mit Clara nach Düsseldorf. Dort wurde er freundlichst empfangen und Schumann, dessen psychische Gesundheit schon sehr gelitten hatte, schrieb voller Enthusiasmus eine Sinfonie in der neuen Heimat. So klingt an manchen Stellen eine zarte Zuversicht in der Musik.

The BADISCHE STAATSTHEATER had already invited the internationally sought-after conductor Markus Stenz last year, and this concert will now be rescheduled. Stenz has recorded many Mahler and modern composers as well as leading important orchestras as chief conductor.

Bartók wrote the dance suite as a commission; The occasion was the 50th anniversary of the unification of the cities of Buda and Pest. As a despiser of the chauvinist government of his time, Bartók writes a dance suite that unites peoples, bringing together Hungarian and Romanian folklore with oriental and Arabic elements. The composer himself spoke of a "brotherhood of peoples".

The Hungarian Franz Liszt composed quite differently in his Piano Concerto No. 1 , on which he worked for 20 years. At the beginning, the orchestra and piano enter into a dialogue with each other – or rather against each other. Under this harsh opening theme, Liszt is said to have written "You all don't understand that, haha!" after the premiere had failed the critics. Contemporaries thought the orchestral part was too big and the piano-triangle duet in the finale too silly. Today it is a piano concerto that impresses with its alternation between virtuoso waterfalls and leisurely noise that combines symphonic features and nocturne character.

The Rheinische marks a new beginning in the life of the Schumann family. In 1841 Robert moved to Düsseldorf with Clara. There he received a warm welcome and Schumann, whose mental health had already suffered greatly, enthusiastically wrote a symphony in his new homeland. This is how a tender confidence sounds in the music in some places.
