"Is all this just a wild dream, or does this life and this death have a meaning?" wrote Gustav Mahler in a programmatic presentation of the first movement of his powerful Second Symphony. With it, Cornelius Meister and the Stuttgart State Orchestra continue their Mahler cycle and for the first time create a symphony concert together with the multiple award-winning State Opera Choir. In that first movement, the hero of Mahler's First Symphony is buried. Two hazy memories of the life of the deceased follow, before the voice of faith rings out in the fourth movement, the “Urlicht”, with the alto solo. Mahler finally introduces the longed-for answer to the initial question in the last movement, in which an apocalyptic long-distance orchestra calls for Judgment Day. As if out of nowhere, the chorus announces the redeeming message: "Resurrect, yes you will rise". As a fascinating reflection of Mahler's own existential struggle, the second, like his first, stands in a close autobiographical context: “My two symphonies exhaust the content of my entire life; what I have put down in it is what I have experienced and suffered, truth and poetry in tones.”
