Wie schon in der vergangenen Spielzeit steht erneut Richard Strauss im Mittelpunkt eines Konzertprogramms: Tod und Verklärung (Urauff ührung 1890) ist die dritte seiner neun Sinfonischen Dichtungen. Strauss ist etwas mehr als 20 Jahre alt, als er sich mit dem Sterben beschäftigt – ohne äußeren Anlass wie den Tod eines Familienmitgliedes. Strauss beschreibt in einem Brief, wie sich die Gefühle eines Sterbenden zwischen Schmerzattacken und Jugenderinnerungen abwechseln. Unregelmäßige Paukenrhythmen machen seinen Herzschlag hörbar, Tam-Tam-Schläge läuten die Todesstunde ein: „Die Seele verläßt den Körper, um im ewigen Weltenraum das vollendet, in herrlichster Gestalt zu fi nden, was es hienieden nicht erfüllen konnte.“ Die Verklärung erstrahlt in C-Dur.

Obwohl das Hornkonzert (Urauff ührung 1885) nur wenige Jahre jünger ist, klingt es vollkommen anders: Der 18-jährige Strauss schrieb es als Geburtstagsgeschenk für seinen Vater, der Hornist am Münchner Hofopernorchester war. Strauss hält das Konzert in einem klassisch-frühromantischen Stil, der nichts mit dem zu tun hat, was er 30 Jahre später komponieren sollte: 1909 schrieb er Elektra, 1911 Der Rosenkavalier – „Da liegen Galaxien dazwischen“, sagt Georg Fritzsch, Generalmusikdirektor der STAATSKAPELLE.

Entsprechend klingt auch die Alpensinfonie (Urauff ührung 1915) vollkommen anders als der erste Teil des Konzerts. Die letzte Sinfonische Dichtung von Strauss beschreibt eine spektakuläre Bergwanderung: Mit 120 Musiker*innen, unter anderem Orgel, Windmaschine und Kuhglocken, erzeugt die Sinfonie ein Klangkino mit Landschaften, Gipfelglück und Gewitter. Es ist aber mehr als eine akustische Illustration. Strauss zeichnet ein von Nietzsche geprägtes Naturbild – die Abkehr vom Christentum und „Anbetung der ewig herrlichen Natur“. Und so erhebt er die Natur- und Kunsterfahrung zum Religionsersatz. Die Alpensinfonie hätte schon zum Antrittskonzert von Georg Fritzsch erklingen sollen, nun wird sein Wunsch nachgeholt.

As in the previous season, Richard Strauss is once again the focus of a concert programme: Death and Transfiguration (first performed in 1890) is the third of his nine symphonic poems. Strauss is a little over 20 years old when he deals with dying - without an external reason such as the death of a family member. Strauss describes in a letter how the feelings of a dying person alternate between attacks of pain and memories of youth. Irregular timpani rhythms make his heartbeat audible, tam-tam beats herald the hour of death: "The soul leaves the body in order to fi nd in the eternal cosmos that which it could not fulfill here below, in the most glorious form." The transfiguration shines in C major.

Although the Horn Concerto (first performed in 1885) is only a few years younger, it sounds completely different: 18-year-old Strauss wrote it as a birthday present for his father, who was a horn player in the Munich Court Opera Orchestra. Strauss holds the concerto in a classical-early romantic style that has nothing to do with what he was to compose 30 years later: in 1909 he wrote Elektra , in 1911 Der Rosenkavalier - "There are galaxies in between," says Georg Fritzsch, General Music Director of the STAATSKAPELLE .

Accordingly, the Alpine Symphony (first performed in 1915) sounds completely different from the first part of the concert. Strauss' last symphonic poem describes a spectacular mountain hike: with 120 musicians, including organ, wind machine and cowbells, the symphony creates a sound cinema with landscapes, happiness at the summit and thunderstorms. But it is more than an acoustic illustration. Strauss draws an image of nature influenced by Nietzsche - the turning away from Christianity and "worship of the eternally glorious nature". And so he elevates the experience of nature and art to a substitute for religion. The Alpensinfonie should have been played at Georg Fritzsch's inaugural concert, but now his wish has been made up for.
