‘인류여, 영원한 환희를 노래하라’
베토벤의 <교향곡 제9번> ‘합창’은 고전주의 교향곡 형식의 완성을 선언함과 동시에 새로운 음악적 질서의 개막을 선언하는 작품이기도 하다. 태초의 시기 우주의 시작을 알리는 듯한 신비로운 화음으로 1악장이 시작되면, 인류가 겪었던 세계사의 도도한 흐름을 인격화한 듯한 거인의 성큼 거리는 발걸음으로 격정적인 진격의 음악이 전개된다. 2악장에서 뜻밖의 스케르초를 선보인 베토벤은 3악장에서 유장하고 장엄한 음률의 바다로 듣는 이에게 깊은 정신적 감화를 선사한다. 4악장에 이르러 절대음악의 표현력이 극한에까지 다다르자, 베이스의 선창을 기점으로 네 명의 솔리스트와 합창이 한데 어우러져 프리드리히 쉴러의 ‘환희의 송가’를 목청껏 노래한다. 우주적 질서의 거대한 운행과 인류의 대화합을 노래한 이 기념비적 교향곡은 서양 예술사의 한 시대를 열어젖힌 가장 결정적인 전환점이기도 했다. “포옹하라 전 인류여! 온 세상에 그대들의 입맞춤을 전하라!” 베토벤의 숭고한 외침이 울려퍼진 지도 200여년이 다되어 가지만, 그가 외쳤던 영원한 화합과 인류애에 대한 갈구는 지금도 현재 진행형인 듯 하다.
