Szövegkönyvét Carl Hafner és Richard Genée írta Julius Roderich Benedix Das Gefängnis című színdarabja, valamint Henri Meilhac és Ludovic Halévy Le réveillon című vígjátéka alapján

Ifj. Johann Strauss negyvenkét nap leforgása alatt komponálta meg élete fő művét, A denevért. Az összekuszált személyazonosságok, a báltermi flörtök, a kibogozhatatlannak tűnő zűrzavar és a slágerekben bővelkedő muzsika önfeledt szórakozást ígérnek. Nem véletlen alakult ki az a hagyomány, hogy a színházak A denevérrel búcsúztatják az óévet.

Eisenstein úgy dönt, hogy a börtön helyett inkább bálba megy, miközben felesége, Rosalinda otthonukban fogadja hódolóját, akit végül a férje helyett hurcolnak el. Közben Adél, a szobalány is arra használja kimenőjét, hogy úrnőjének „kölcsönvett” ruhájában bejusson a bálba, ahol mint színinövendék pózol. Eisenstein hevesen udvarolni kezd neki, aminek az álarcos magyar grófnőnek öltözött Rosalinda is szemtanúja lesz…

Johann Strauss Jr. composed the main work of his life, The Bat , in forty-two days . Tangled identities, ballroom flirtations, seemingly inextricable confusion and music full of hits promise unforgettable entertainment. The tradition that theaters say goodbye to the New Year with The Bat is no accident.

Eisenstein decides to go to a ball instead of prison, while his wife Rosalinda receives her suitor at their home, who is eventually taken away instead of her husband. Meanwhile, Adél, the maid, also uses her exit to get into the ball in her mistress's "borrowed" dress, where she poses as a theater student. Eisenstein starts courting her fiercely, which Rosalinda, dressed as a masked Hungarian countess, will also witness...
