It is one of the emblematic works of the Madrid lyrical farce of the late nineteenth century as it concentrates some of its characteristic elements: the lightness of the plot, the use of local picturesqueness as the main attraction and a certain humorous character. 

 The play reflects the environment of the impoverished Madrid middle class and in contact with the popular class and, to do so, it presents, literary and musically, an action with constant allusions to the news of the day, to types —babysitters, waffle makers, water carriers, etc. — and real situations of economic hardship and specific locations in the city of Madrid. 

 Its musical part is limited to a brief interlude, four musical numbers, one of them integrated in turn by mazurka, bakers, cuarteo and pasacalle, and an ending.  Success has accompanied the work since its premiere, on June 23, 1897. That first night some numbers had to be repeated up to five times and, at the end of the performance, the public waited for Chueca and carried him on their shoulders to his house .  The play was held at the Teatro de Apolo on the Gran Vía, passing the Príncipe Alfonso on the Paseo de Recoletos during the summer.  He returns to the Apolo in September and reaches two hundred performances in a row.  Today it is still an emblematic work of the boy genre.
