Commissioned by the Khedive of Egypt, Ismaïl Pasha, from Giuseppe Verdi in 1869, on the occasion of the construction of the Suez Canal, Aïda will be represented for the first time at the Cairo Theater, built for the occasion, on December 24 1871. The European creation of the opera will take place on February 8, 1872 at La Scala in Milan. Since then, Aïda has been performed hundreds of times around the world.

The idea for this grand spectacle opera was born in the fertile brain of the great French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette, who also imagined the sets and costumes. Antonio Ghislanzoni wrote the libretto, Verdi the music.

Commandé par le khédive d’Egypte, Ismaïl Pacha, à Giuseppe Verdi en 1869, à l’occasion de la construction du canal de Suez, Aïda sera représenté pour la première fois au Théâtre du Caire, construit pour l’occasion, le 24 décembre 1871. La création européenne de l’opéra aura lieu, elle, le 8 février 1872 à la Scala de Milan. Depuis, Aïda a été joué des centaines de fois dans le monde.

L’idée de cet opéra à grand spectacle est née dans le cerveau fertile du grand égyptologue français Auguste Mariette, qui imagina en outre les décors et les costumes. Antonio Ghislanzoni écrivit le livret, Verdi la musique.
