Aleko is an opera in one act by composer Sergei Rachmaninoff, the libretto for the play was written by the outstanding director Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko based on Alexander Pushkin's poem "Gypsies".
Rachmaninoff wrote Aleko as an examination thesis at the Moscow Conservatory in 1892.
The opera immediately captivated the audience and was awarded the Gold Medal.
