The sorceress Melissa can procure anything with her magical, supernatural powers - or almost anything: she still cannot win Amadigi's love. The young titular hero and his friend Dardano are both in love with the beautiful Princess Oriana. With clever intrigues, clever strategies and with the help of Dardano, Melissa tries to separate Amadigi and Oriana. But in the end, true love wins.
A jewel from Handel's time in London, “Amadigi die Gaula” premiered in 1715 and was his fifth piece in his new home. The template is based on the chivalric novel "Amadis de Gaula", which was very popular in the 16th century and which a few years earlier also inspired Jean-Baptiste Lully. Handel's focus on the affects and mood swings of his thoroughly human characters, as well as his ability to portray the actors in a rich and rounded way, are reflected in his score. Despite the short time to compose and although it never reached the popularity of "Rinaldo", "Amadigi di Gaula" quickly gained in popularity.
In the sense of a baroque total work of art, Hinrich Horstkotte brings this magical opera to the stage in a personal union of direction, stage and costumes.
