Amadigi and his companion Dardano want to escape from Melissa's magic garden. But the sorceress wants to win the Gallic knight for herself. But Amadigi has fallen in love with another woman. When he shows Dardano a
portrait of his beloved, the latter is horrified. He loves the same woman, the beautiful princess Oriana. Melissa keeps Oriana imprisoned in a tower, only the strongest of the heroes can succeed in passing Melissa's tests and freeing Oriana. The world of magic, which
plays an important role in many of Handel's works , was actually the domain of French opera. The representation of the supernatural combined mythological and literary subjects and came from French chivalric novels or Italian verse.
Amadigi di Gaulais based on the rare conversion of a French into an Italian libretto. Handel's librettist used the tragédie lyrique Amadis de Grèce by Antoine Houdar de la Motte from 1699, which had been set to music by André Destouches. The epic of Amadis of Gaul is based on the Arthurian legend, the adventures of the invincible Gaul appeared in many sequels and expansions
