The music of Philip Venables marked the Festival d'Automne in 2021. After three original events – an installation at the Saint-Eustache Church, the Talking Music and 4.48 Psychosis concerts – this is a new work with tape and video composed for the pianist Zubin Kanga which he presents in 2022.

Answer Machine Tape, 1987 refers to the work of artist David Wojnarowicz and the turbulent period preceding the 1987 death from AIDS of his close friend, artist Peter Hujar. The answering machine recordings, saved by Wojnarowicz in the days following the death, form the heart of the work. We hear the messages of Hujar, those of other artists, friends, lovers. These are snapshots, a remarkable archive testifying to both queer lifein the city and the life of an artist when the AIDS virus hits. Specially designed sensors turn the piano into a huge typewriter. The pianist constantly tries to project on the screen transcriptions and comments of the recorded messages. It is in fact an oblique, poignant work, which questions the crisis of the AIDS years and the vain attempt at transcription linked to the failure of words. Answer Machine Tape, 1987 is a new work for piano, tape and video designed by Philip Venables and created in collaboration with playwright Ted Huffman and pianist Zubin Kanga. This first major work for solo piano by Philip Venables is a continuation of his collaboration with Ted Huffman dealing with the life stories of queer people.

La musique de Philip Venables a marqué le Festival d’Automne en 2021. Après trois événements originaux, – une installation à l’Église Saint-Eustache, les concerts Talking Music et 4.48 Psychosis –, c’est une nouvelle œuvre avec bande et vidéo composée pour le pianiste Zubin Kanga qu’il présente en 2022.

Answer Machine Tape, 1987 se réfère à l’œuvre de l’artiste David Wojnarowicz et à la période de turbulences précédant la mort due au Sida, en 1987, de son ami proche, l’artiste Peter Hujar. Les enregistrements du répondeur, sauvegardés par Wojnarowicz dans les jours qui ont suivi le décès, forment le cœur de l’œuvre. On y entend les messages de Hujar, ceux d’autres artistes, d’amis, d’amants. Ce sont des instantanés, archive remarquable témoignant à la fois de la vie queer dans la ville et de la vie d’un artiste quand s’abat le virus du Sida. Des capteurs conçus tout spécialement transforment le piano en une énorme machine à écrire. Le pianiste tente sans cesse de projeter sur l’écran des transcriptions et commentaires des messages enregistrés. C’est en fait une œuvre oblique, poignante, qui interroge la crise des années Sida et la vaine tentative de la transcription liée à l’échec des mots. Answer Machine Tape, 1987 est une nouvelle œuvre pour piano, bande et video conçue par Philip Venables et créée en collaboration avec le dramaturge Ted Huffman et le pianiste Zubin Kanga. Cette première œuvre d’envergure pour piano solo de Philip Venables s’inscrit dans la continuité de sa collaboration avec Ted Huffman traitant des histoires de vie de personnes queer.
