C’est à la suite de la mort de sa fille au berceau que Dvořák compose en 1875 une ébauche de ce Stabat Mater pour solistes, chœur et piano. Une nouvelle épreuve le frappe en 1877 avec la perte à quelques mois d’intervalle de ses deux autres enfants. C’est après ce nouveau drame qu’il reprend la composition de l’œuvre en y ajoutant trois mouvements et en l’orchestrant.

Ce Stabat Mater est donc le témoignage de la propre souffrance du compositeur face à la mort où il s’identifie à la Vierge Marie au pied de la Croix et où l’expression de sa sincère affliction atteint une grandeur universelle.L’œuvre, créée en 1880 à Prague, connut rapidement un immense succès et fut reprise à travers l’Europe et aux Etats-Unis, contribuant à la reconnaissance internationale du compositeur.

It was following the death of his daughter in the cradle that Dvořák composed in 1875 a draft of this Stabat Mater for soloists, choir and piano. A new ordeal struck him in 1877 with the loss a few months apart of his two other children. It was after this new drama that he resumed the composition of the work by adding three movements and orchestrating it.

This Stabat Mater is therefore the testimony of the composer's own suffering in the face of death, where he identifies himself with the Virgin Mary at the foot of the Cross and where the expression of his sincere affliction reaches universal grandeur. premiered in 1880 in Prague, quickly enjoyed immense success and was performed throughout Europe and in the United States, contributing to the international recognition of the composer.
