TANZMEISTER (Nando Zickgraf) in Ariadne auf Naxos

In its original version from 1912, ›Ariadne auf Naxos‹ went beyond all dimensions due to the intended combination with a play – and failed. In response, the authors replaced the spoken theater with an approximately 40-minute prelude. This turbulent comedy about two quarreling theater troupes of the serious and entertaining genre became a linguistic and musical gem for them. At the end of the prelude, the composer elevates himself to great emphatic chanting of the incantatory words »Music is a sacred art«.

For the first time in the performance history of ›Ariadne auf Naxos‹, the Wuppertal new production does not follow the original opera act. In its place we put the one-act opera Bluebeard's Castle, written at the same time, by the Hungarian composer Béla Bartók. Duke Bluebeard once again leads a woman into the abysmal darkness of his castle. »This work«, wrote the composer Zoltán Kodály of Bartók's only opera, »is a masterpiece, a condensed tragedy, a musical volcano that erupts for sixty minutes and leaves us with only one wish: to hear it all again.«

In ihrer Urfassung von 1912 sprengte ›Ariadne auf Naxos‹ durch die vorgesehene Kombination mit einem Schauspiel alle Dimensionen – und fiel durch. Als Reaktion ersetzten die Autoren das Sprechtheater durch ein etwa 40-minütiges Vorspiel. Diese turbulente Komödie um zwei streitende Theatertruppen des ernsten und unterhaltenden Genres geriet ihnen zu einem sprachlichen wie musikalischen Kleinod. Mit den beschwörend gesungenen Worten »Musik ist eine heilige Kunst« schwingt sich der Komponist am Ende des Vorspiels zu großer Emphase auf.

Darauf folgt bei der Wuppertaler Neuproduktion erstmals in der Aufführungsgeschichte von ›Ariadne auf Naxos‹ nicht der ursprüngliche Opernakt. Wir haben an seine Stelle den gleichzeitig entstandenen Operneinakter ›Herzog Blaubarts Burg‹ des ungarischen Komponisten Béla Bartók gesetzt. Herzog Blaubart führt darin eine Frau in die abgründige Dunkelheit seiner Burg. »Dieses Werk«, schrieb der Komponist Zoltán Kodály über Bartóks einzige Oper, »ist ein Meisterstück, eine komprimierte Tragödie, ein musikalischer Vulkan, der sechzig Minuten lang ausbricht und uns mit nur einem Wunsch zurücklässt: das Ganze noch einmal zu hören.«
