Handel's twenty-ninth Italian opera, Ariodante was the composer's first operatic work expressly conceived for the brand new Covent Garden theatre. It was, with Alcina , which dates from the same year 1735, one of the last Italian opuses thanks to which the musician enjoyed success in London. The art of composition so inventive in Handel can be heard here in each number, mainly in a vocal writing which flourishes thanks to new expressive means but also in the expansion of the musical vocabulary, which is not repugnant to draw on French material. Handel is here at the height of his art in a perfect demonstration of colorful lyrical writing in all the most subtle nuances.

Vingt-neuvième opéra italien de Haendel, Ariodante fut le premier ouvrage lyrique expressément conçu par le compositeur pour le tout nouveau théâtre de Covent Garden. Ce fut, avec Alcina, qui date de cette même année 1735, l’un des derniers opus italiens grâce auxquels le musicien connut le succès à Londres. L’art de la composition si inventif chez Haendel s’entend ici à chaque numéro, principalement dans une écriture vocale qui s’épanouit grâce à de nouveaux moyens expressifs mais également dans l’élargissement du vocabulaire musical, qui ne répugne d’ailleurs pas à puiser dans la matière française. Haendel est ici au sommet de son art dans une démonstration parfaite d’écriture lyrique haute en couleurs déclinées dans toutes les nuances les plus subtiles.
