Sein »Deutsches Requiem« ist ein Requiem der Zuversicht. Mit dem in zeitlicher Nähe dazu entstandenen »Schicksalslied« folgte Johannes Brahms einer ähnlichen Intention: Im Gegensatz zur Gedichtvorlage von Hölderlin lässt er sein musikalisches »Schicksalslied « in hoffnungsvollen Tönen ausklingen. Gegen Gleichgültigkeit und Vergessen appelliert Max Reger in seinem Requiem, das er als eindringlichen Klagegesang angesichts der sinnlosen Opfer des Ersten Weltkriegs ausgestaltete. Zum zweiten Mal in dieser Spielzeit ist Wiebke Lehmkuhl versierte Solistin in Regers Klangwelten. Tschaikowsky haderte mit seinem Fatum. Seine »Fünfte« mit dem omnipräsenten »Schicksalsmotiv« ist die musikalische Blaupause seines inneren Seelendramas. Die französische Sängerin und Dirigentin Nathalie Stutzmann, frisch gekürte Musikdirektorin in Atlanta, debütiert mit diesem schicksalsträchtigen Programm bei den Münchner Philharmonikern.

His "German Requiem" is a requiem of confidence. Regarding the title motif: Max Reger's »Requiem« is a setting of Hebbel's poem of the same name. It is about man's fear of being finally forgotten and dissolving into nothingness. The burning candle stands for the light of the soul of a deceased person, which shines forever - the soul remains unforgotten. At the same time, the candle is a universal symbol for the elementary human longing for light and warmth, help and security, comfort and peace.
