The unapproachable gypsy Carmen wraps all the men around her finger, both the daring torero Escamillo and the conscientious soldier Don José, who despairs of her. The deadly jealousy drama has always fascinated with its exotic title character, with unbourgeois wishful fantasies about life as a smuggler and with a wealth of songs and famous melodies such as Carmen's "Habanera" and "Seguidilla", José's flower aria and Escamillo's torero song.

"Love is a gypsy child, it has never known a law...", sings Carmen proudly, confidently and freely - and yet stylized as an outsider. The “traveling life” may evoke idyllic images, but in reality it was always a struggle for recognition in a hostile environment. This Carmen production shows the struggle for freedom and the admirable self-assertion of a woman who has been pushed to the margins and dumped on society's dumping ground, and thus goes far beyond the clichéd gypsy romance and Spanish folklore.
