„Carmina Burana“ (lateinisch für „Beurer Lieder“ oder „Lieder aus Benediktbeuern“) ist der Titel einer szenischen Kantate von Carl Orff aus den Jahren 1935 /1936. Die Texte in mittellateinischer und mittelhochdeutscher Sprache sind einer Sammlung von Lied- und Dramentexten aus dem 11. und 12. Jahrhundert entnommen. Mit „O Fortuna“ wendet sich der Chor zunächst an die Schicksalsgöttin, bevor es in mehreren Etappen weitergeht: Zuerst zu des Frühlings Erwachen, wo aufs Neue die Sonne allen zulächelt und voller Liebesfreude auf der Wiese getanzt wird. Dann fällt der Blick in eine Schenke, wo dem leiblichen Genuss und dem Schlaraffenleben gehuldigt wird – außer vom Schwan, der angebraten seinen Abgesang gibt. Am Hof der Liebesabenteuer fliegen schließlich Amors Pfeile kreuz und quer, bevor eine erneute Zuwendung an Fortuna das Werk abrundet.

Dank ihrer hohen Popularität und dramatischen Wirkung gehört Orffs „szenische Kantate“ zu den meistgespielten Musikstücken. Vor allem die berühmte Einleitung „O Fortuna“ wird in Soundtracks für Filme, Serien und in Werbespots gerne zitiert. Trotz der Gattungszugehörigkeit wird diese Kantate allerdings seltener szenisch als meist konzertant aufgeführt. Einem groß angelegten Spektakel steht aber nichts im Wege: Mit großem Chor und Orchester, Soli, Ballett und Kinderchor kommt „Carmina Burana“ als Teil einer Doppelveranstaltung auf die Bühne der Festung Ehrenbreitstein.

“Carmina Burana” (Latin for “Beurer Lieder” or “Songs from Benediktbeuern”) is the title of a scenic cantata by Carl Orff from 1935/1936. The texts in Middle Latin and Middle High German are taken from a collection of song and drama texts from the 11th and 12th centuries. With “O Fortuna” the choir first addresses the goddess of fate, before continuing in several stages: first to the awakening of spring, where the sun smiles at everyone again and people dance on the meadow full of the joy of love. Then the view falls into a tavern, where physical enjoyment and the life of milk and honey are paid homage - except for the swan, which gives its swan song after being fried. Finally, at the court of love adventures, Cupid's arrows fly all over the place before a renewed turn to Fortuna rounds off the work.

Thanks to its high popularity and dramatic impact, Orff's “scenic cantata” is one of the most frequently performed pieces of music. The famous introduction “O Fortuna” in particular is often quoted in soundtracks for films, series and in commercials. Despite its genre, this cantata is performed less often as a stage than as a concert. But nothing stands in the way of a large-scale spectacle: with a large choir and orchestra, soloists and children's choir, “Carmina Burana” comes to the stage of Ehrenbreitstein Fortress as part of a double event.
