Sicilian village... circa 1880.
The peasant Turridu, who once loved his fellow villager Lola, consoled himself with a new attachment - Santuzza. Lola, having married the driver Alfio, does not find happiness in marriage and rekindles former feelings in Turrida. Turrida grows cold towards Santuzza, which drives her to despair.
Santuzza confides to mother Turiddu Lucia the whole story of her bitter love.
Lola's husband has no doubts about the integrity of his wife.
Santuzza begs Turrida to return to her. But he is annoyed by her eternal jealousy.
Lola appears and Turiddu hurries after a beautiful and coquettish woman. Santuzza blocks his way. In response to this, Turiddu rudely pushes away his bored mistress. The girl, crying, curses the traitor... Suddenly she sees the driver Alfio and tells him about the criminal love of Turiddu and Lola. Alfio rages like a madman and vows revenge.
The people leave the church after the Easter service. Turiddu wants to treat the driver with wine, but the driver knocks the glass out of him. This insult can only be washed away with blood. Turiddu, according to Sicilian custom, bites Alfio on the ear. It's a challenge.
The battle will be with knives, not for life, but for death. Turiddu suddenly sobers up. He remembers: if he is killed, Santuzza will be left alone. He would like to make up with Alfio already, but it's too late. He says that he is waiting for him outside the village ...
Turiddu says goodbye to his mother. Feeling guilty towards Santuzza, he asks his mother to take care of her.
After an ominous silence, a terrible cry is heard: "They killed Turidda!"
