The program of this evening consists of musical rarities. Listeners will have a unique opportunity to hear rarely performed masterpieces by Cherubini and Rossini performed by leading Russian ensembles - the Danilov Monastery Choir, the Siberian Male Choir and the MUSICA VIVA orchestra.

Requiem in D minor by Luigi Cherubini, one of the most significant composers of the turn of the 18th - early 19th centuries. Beethoven wrote: "I honor Cherubini more than all living composers."  Author of 30 operas, co-founder of the Paris Conservatory, chief composer of the French Revolution, Cherubini managed to work in all contemporary musical genres: from mass to song and march. Today, Cherubini is best known as the author of the opera Medea, which in the 20th century owes its popularity to Maria Callas. 

Another pinnacle of Cherubini's work is the Requiems in C minor and D minor. “I completely agree with his [Cherubini] interpretation of the Requiem; if I ever take up such a thing, I will take something to note for myself, ” his contemporaries recalled Beethoven’s words. Cherubini's Requiem in D minor was written for male choir. The composition was not chosen by chance. In the first requiem, Cherubini used a female choir, which caused the disapproval of the Archbishop of Paris. The next time the composer took into account all the comments.

The oratorio "Oedipus at Colon" by Gioachino Rossini for bass, male choir and orchestra was written by the composer in 1817 based on the tragedy of the same name by Sophocles. The translation into Italian was made by his contemporary Giambattista Giusti, a hydraulic engineer, translator and connoisseur of ancient literature. "Oedipus at Colon" is a masterpiece of "delightful Rossini" in the cantata-oratorio genre. For a long time the oratorio remained in oblivion, but returned to the stage with a triumph - in 1982 it was performed at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro.
