The Corinthian Orchestra performs a programme of 20th-century gems by Ravel, Rachmaninov and Stravinsky, conducted by Michael Seal.


Ravel’s La valse was originally conceived as an homage to Johan Strauss’ waltzing Vienna but evolved to become a bitter and violent fantasy, a terrifying tone poem that helped define a new language of musical nightmare.

At the time when Stravinsky was emerging as Russia’s great avant-gardist his fellow countryman Rachmaninov, was embarking on the second phase of his career as a concert pianist in the Romantic tradition. His Third Piano Concerto is excruciatingly difficult writing, with sprawling chords and magnificent lines, rich orchestral textures and dark bittersweet melodies.

After the interval, hear Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, his landmark work which supposedly caused a riot at its premiere in Paris and has been the touchstone for modern music ever since.
