O mad desire to seek to discover this evil which, a once found, makes us unhappy. This evil of which Don Alfonso speaks with great wisdom and experience is that of jealousy which, like any deadly poison, requires shock treatment. To demonstrate to Ferrando and Guglielmo that women can be just as unfaithful that men – humanity is thus made –, he offers them to conquer their respective fiancées, Dorabella and Fiordiligi, borrowing new identities. This game of dupes quickly turns into a love affair and provokes a series of misunderstandings, heartbreaks and revelations that will shake up the ideals and the naivety of four lovebirds. In the language of love, gestures and looks are often much more and sincere than long speeches.
This discrepancy between the "said" and the "unsaid" is the essence even from Così fan tutte : the sublime music of Mozart speaks much more than the mischievous words of Da Ponte. That exploration of the infinite meanders of desire undertaken at the end of the 18th century, the director David Hermann turns it into a loving odyssey driven through the times and the horrors of the first half of the 20th century.
