"Cupid and Death" (Cupidon et la Mort) from November 18 to 27, 2021 at the Athénée 8 p.m., 4 p.m. on Sunday Ensemble Correspondances Musical direction Sébastien Daucé A mask by James Shirley Music Matthew Locke, Christopher Gibbons Staging Jos Houben, Emily Wilson Sébastien Daucé is the musical director of the piece, with his Ensemble Correspondances. Born in the 16th century in England, the "masks", or rather masks, had the characteristics of mixing music, song, dance, theater, grandiloquent decorations... in the service of a figure of power whose qualities were praised. All elements that would later flourish in the Baroque gesture and that we find in French court performances. 'Cupid & Death', a mask with five entries, begins with an inversion: Cupid launches his arrows on two lovers and kills them, while death pricks with points of love two old men ready for death. Cupid and Death reinvents, in collaboration with extraordinary artists, this style that was the English “Mask” of the 17th century . Sébastien Daucé and directors Jos Houben and Emily Wilson take on an experimental piece born at a time when librettists and composers were testing the waters of English opera. A sumptuous entertainment with refined and grotesque choreographies, allegorical and comic scenes where gods, humans and animals mix in improbable and absurd intrigues
