Timbre de velours mat, étonnant de mobilité jusque dans ses profondeurs, le baryton allemand incarne à lui seul l’art du Lied. En 2008, il entamait chez Harmonia Mundi une édition Schubert dont chaque volume a la particularité d’être accompagné par un pianiste différent. C’est Christoph Eschenbach, sous la direction duquel il a notamment interprété Mathis der Maler de Hindemith à l’Opéra Bastille, que Matthias Goerne a choisi pour remettre sur le métier La Belle Meunière, premier volet d’un cycle qui se poursuivra sur l’ensemble de la saison
