"Let's be criminals!" says the hunter Josuke to his lover Saiko on the beach. His wife Midori watches them and recognizes the relationship between her husband and her best friend. For more than ten years, Midori will not reveal to the two that she knows about their relationship. Saiko guards the knowledge in her diary, which protects her daughter Shoko from the flames and thus learns about it. She can no longer talk about it with her mother, Saiko took the secret with her to her death. This story is sent to a poet in the form of three letters from these three women. He had written a poem about a hunter he had only seen from behind on a hike. Exactly this hunter recognized himself in the poem.

Yasushi Inoue's 1949 book tells of conflicting feelings and hidden secrets. It reveals the loneliness of the hunter, whose hunting rifle presses the "whole burden deep in the soul and body of the lonely man" and exudes "a strange, bloodstained beauty." The Tyrolean composer and pianist Thomas Larcher wrote his first opera based on this bestseller. His works are performed worldwide. The debut novel by the librettist Friederike Gösweiner was awarded the Austrian Book Prize in 2016.

The Austrian actor and film director Karl Markovics is staging an opera for the first time.
