Richard Wagner's romantic opera “The Flying Dutchman”, which premiered in Dresden in 1843, is based on an old legend that was best known in the 19th century in Heinrich Heine's version. The material contains realistic and mythical elements, with Wagner concentrating on the idea of ​​salvation. Wagner repeatedly took up the topic of 'redemption in death through love' later on. This makes the 30-year-old's opera a breakthrough in his own style. For centuries a curse has condemned the Dutch to restless voyages on the oceans. Every seven years he is allowed to go ashore - in the hope of being redeemed through the faithfulness of a woman. While going ashore, he meets Captain Daland, who promises him his daughter Senta as a wife for a sum of money.
