Musical Direction.- Paul Daniel PLOT The captain of a Dutch ship is cursed with endlessly wandering the seas, having only a one-day truce every seven years. If on that day he gets the love of a woman, he will be redeemed from her punishment. The opera begins with a great storm, and the Norwegian Daland is adrift with his ship, with the crew exhausted and fearful of the state of the sea. At that moment a ghost ship approaches them: the flying dutchman's ship Daland boards the ship and sees the riches the Dutchman has on it. The captain asks him for hospitality, and when he hears about Senta, Daland's daughter, he asks for her hand, which he grants out of greed. At Daland's house, Senta and other girls are spinning. Senta is haunted by the legend of the Flying Dutchman. Erik, her fiancé, announces the arrival of two ships. As they land, Senta immediately recognizes the Dutchman and proclaims her willingness to save him from her doom. Erik reminds Senta that they are engaged, a conversation the Dutchman overhears, that he does not want the girl to break her promise, and prepares to set sail again. Senta manages to escape from those who hold her and throws herself into the sea. At that moment, the spirits of the young woman and that of the Dutchman, already redeemed by love, ascend together to heaven.
