Purcell s’inspire d’un épisode raconté par Virgile dans l’Énéide : comment Énée réussit à fuir Troie en flammes, arrive à Carthage, séduit la reine Didon mais doit l’abandonner afin de fonder l’Italie.

Sur cette trame très simple, Purcell a composé une partition d’une grande variété mêlant pastorale, comédie burlesque et tragédie, avec des danses, des sorcières, un faux Mercure travesti, tout un ensemble pittoresque aboutissant à l’ultime air de Didon, « When I am laid in earth », l’un des plus saisissants du répertoire.

Il s’agit aussi de l’une des pièces les plus chéries de William Christie et des Arts Florissants. Avec tous les solistes exceptionnels comme Lea Desandre et Renato Dolcini dans les rôles titres et les musiciens pris eux aussi dans le mouvement de la danse qu’a imaginé pour sa mise en scène la chorégraphe Blanca Li, c’est à un des temps forts les plus attendus de la saison lyrique que nous promettent Les Arts Florissants avec ce Didon et Énée coproduit par le Théâtre Impérial - Opéra de Compiègne.

Purcell is inspired by an episode told by Virgil in the Aeneid : how Aeneas succeeds in fleeing Troy in flames, arrives in Carthage, seduces Queen Dido but must abandon her in order to found Italy.

On this very simple framework, Purcell composed a score of great variety mixing pastoral, burlesque comedy and tragedy, with dances, witches, a fake Mercury in disguise, a whole picturesque ensemble culminating in Dido's final aria, " When I am laid in earth” , one of the most gripping in the repertoire.

It is also one of the most cherished pieces by William Christie and Les Arts Florissants. With all the exceptional soloists like Lea Desandre and Renato Dolcini in the title roles and the musicians also caught up in the dance movement that choreographer Blanca Li has imagined for her staging, it is one of the expected of the lyrical season that Les Arts Florissants promise us with this Dido and Aenea co-produced by the Imperial Theater - Opéra de Compiègne.
