Konstanze, Blonde and Pedrillo are prisoners of Bassa Selim at the Ottoman court in Istanbul. Belmonte, Konstanze's groom, plans to secretly free her, but the night's action is discovered. Strangely enough, the punishment does not come, Bassa Selim lets the two couples go. The reason: Belmonte's father once deprived the Bassa of office, homeland and wife when the Christians
took over the rule in the country. As a renegade, as an apostate Muslim, he now wants to prove to the Christian that he acts more humanely than his father. But the tremendous upheaval in his life and the love for Konstanze, which he gives up, hint at personal experiences behind the demonstrative gesture that have deeply hurt him.

Konstanze, Blonde und Pedrillo sind Gefangene des Bassa Selim am osmanischen Hof in Istanbul. Belmonte, der Bräutigam Konstanzes, plant, sie heimlich zu befreien, doch die nächtliche Aktion wird entdeckt. Die Strafe bleibt merkwürdigerweise aus, Bassa Selim lässt die beiden Paare gehen. Der Grund: Belmontes Vater hatte einst den Bassa um Amt, Heimat und Frau gebracht, als die Christen die Herrschaft im Land
übernahmen. Als Renegat, als glaubensabtrünniger Moslem, will er nun dem Christen beweisen, dass er humaner handelt als dessen Vater. Doch der gewaltige Umbruch in seinem Leben und die Liebe zu Konstanze, die er aufgibt, lassen hinter der demonstrativen Geste persönliche Erfahrungen ahnen, die ihn zutiefst verletzt haben.
