DIE FLEDERMAUS, Die Theater Chemnitz

Some time ago, Gabriel von Eisenstein met his friend, the notary Dr. Falcon disgraced after a carnival ball. Now Falke wants to take revenge on Eisenstein and stages a revenge that, with its trials and tribulations, not only upsets Eisenstein's emotional life. He invites Eisenstein to a ball and presents him with a fiery Hungarian countess. Eisenstein promptly falls into the trap and realizes much too late that his own wife is hiding behind the mask of the beautiful Hungarian ...

" Die Fledermaus is as classic as Wagner's Ring of the Nibelungs." With these words, the conductor Hans von Bülow described the work known as theOperetta is par excellence and has enjoyed uninterrupted popularity with audiences for more than 140 years. The Viennese were initially at odds as to whether they should like the third operetta by their beloved "Schani", as Johann Strauss's son was called, or not. An article in the Wiener Fremdenblatt read: “Of course, you have to put up with a lot of frivolity; when, for example, a strange man takes off his coat in the presence of the woman he admires and throws himself into the dressing gown of the head of the house who has gone out, or when a respectable gentleman at the masked ball clings to the bosom of his Dulcinea and counts her heartbeats with his watch. So we find it more mean than spicy.”

Johannes Pölzgutter, the director of the new Chemnitzer Fledermaus , comes from Vienna. He gained his first theater experience at the Vienna Volksoper and the Lucerne Theater before becoming a freelance director and responsible for a wide variety of musical theater productions. He has staged works such as Handel's Alcina , Donizetti's Don Pasquale , Rimsky-Korsakov 's The Golden Rooster , Verdi's Falstaff , Puccini's La Bohème and Madama Butterfly , Maderna's Satyricon and Sondheim's Sweeney Todd .
