An operetta written on a libretto by the author duo Carl Haffner and Richard Genée based on vaudeville by Henry Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy Réveillon. The bat was first staged with great success in 1874 at the Vienna Theater in Vienna, from where it flew to operetta and later opera stages around the world. It is still considered one of the best written classical operettas. A funny story from a bourgeois environment about Gabriel Eisenstein, who has to go to prison for a few days, his wife Rosalinda, who is backed by her longtime love tenor Alfred, and the revenge of Dr. Falke, who wants to repay Gabriel for his prank when he let him run across the city in a bat costume, is set in the other story events of the story, and especially in the sparkling music of Strauss.

Opereta napsaná na libreto autorské dvojice Carla Haffnera a Richarda Genée podle vaudevillu Henry Meilhaca a Ludovica Halévyho Réveillon. Netopýr byl poprvé uveden s obrovským úspěchem v roce 1874 ve vídeňském Divadle na Vídeňce, odkud se rozletěl na operetní a později i operní jeviště celého světa. Dosud je považován za jednu z nejlépe napsaných klasických operet. Vtipný příběh z měšťáckého prostředí o Gabrielu Eisensteinovi, který musí na několik dní do vězení, jeho ženě Rosalindě, za kterou přichází její dávná láska tenorista Alfred, a pomstě dr. Falkeho, který chce Gabrielovi oplatit jeho žertík, kdy jej nechal v kostýmu netopýra běžet přes celé město, je zasazen ještě do dalších dějových peripetií příběhu, a především do jiskřivé Straussovy hudby.
