The Operettentheater Salzburg was founded as a touring ensemble by Joachim Schlote and was able to make a brilliant debut in 2010 with its first production of Csárdásfürstin, which was awarded the INTHEGA Prize for the “best music theater production of the season”. The Operettentheater Salzburg is in the tradition of the classic operetta with a certain fresh esprit of today. Musically and vocally at a high level, it promises to take the audience away from everyday life for a few hours with the best entertainment through scenically authentic flair and lively presentation. Today it is regarded as a benchmark touring ensemble for operetta.

Die Fledermaus, premiered in Vienna in 1874, is considered the highlight of the golden Viennese operetta era. With immortal numbers such as the clock duet, the Csárdas, Adele's Mein Herr Marquis and the choral waltz Brüderlein und Schwesterlein, Die Fledermaus is one of the three most famous works by Johann Strauss, along with "Der Zigeunerbaron" and " Eine Nacht in Venice". It is also one of the few operettas that are regularly performed at major international opera houses. The reason for this is above all the extremely subtle, rousing and masterfully orchestrated composition.

The text is catchy and full of bitter irony with timeless truths. The action takes place in a seaside resort near a big city. The background story that explains the title of the operetta was that Herr von Eisenstein asked the notary Dr. Dr. Falke, drunk after a night at the ball and disguised as a bat, roamed the streets in the morning. To take revenge on his friend Eisenstein, Dr. Falke played an ingenious game of mistakes at Prince Orlofsky's masked ball. While Eisenstein, who should have spent the night in prison for insulting officials, flirts with his maid in costume at the ball, apparently unrecognized, Eisenstein's wife Rosalinde, who also appears incognito, gets her money's worth. Only their lover Alfred, whom the prison governor arrested as alleged Eisenstein during the tryst with Rosalinde, has to spend the night in prison. There is room for the exhilarating reflections of the cell guard, Frosch, who makes sharp-tongued comments on the politics of the day. When all masks finally fall and the extramarital affairs come to light, it becomes clear how successful the bat's revenge was.
