In diesem Buch der Bücher (genauer gesagt im Markus-Evangelium) findet sich die Vorlage des Dramas um die Königstochter Salome, das der englische Schriftsteller Oscar Wilde verfasste, woraus Richard Strauss wiederum eine Oper machte: König Herodes hält den Propheten Johannes den Täufer in einer Zisterne seines Palasts gefangen, weil der ihn öffentlich kritisiert hat. Herodes‘ Stieftochter Salome ist besessen von der Vorstellung, den heiligen Mann zu küssen, ihr Stiefvater wiederum ist fasziniert von Salome. Er verspricht: „um was du mich auch bitten wirst, ich werde es dir geben bis zur Hälfte meines Reiches“, wenn sie für ihn und seine Gäste tanzt. Das tut Salome und fordert danach von Herodes die Einlösung des Versprechens: den Kopf des toten Johannes ...

Auch der Protogonist der „Symphonie fantastique“, wie man weiß eine Art autobiographische Fantasie des Komponisten Hector Berlioz, ist erotisch besessen. Das angebetete Objekt seiner Begierde erscheint als Melodie, die Berlioz als „Idée fixe“ bezeichnet in allen Teilen des Orchesterwerks. Die Sinfonie stellt die Begegnungen des unglücklich Liebenden mit der unglücklich Geliebten in allerlei Situationen dar, bis er im Opiumrausch das Opfer schrecklicher Halluzinationen wird. Die klassische Psychiatrie bezeichnet, mit dem Begriff „Idée fixe“ übrigens einen Wahn- oder Zwangsgedanken.
